October is Investor Education (IE) Month, and the Nova Scotia Securities Commission has IE events and content planned throughout the month to help Nova Scotians make more informed investment decisions. Here’s a rundown of what we have planned for the month.
Presentations:
NSSC has two presentations scheduled at the Halifax Central Library in October. The first week of October is also Seniors’ Week in Nova Scotia. On October 2 we will be hosting our financial elder abuse presentation at the Central Library.
Thursday, October 2, 7:00 p.m. - Recognizing Financial Elder Abuse & Investment Fraud
Did you know that financial elder abuse is the most prevalent form of elder abuse? As Nova Scotia’s population continues to get older, financial elder abuse is becoming more prevalent.
Join David Harrison from the Nova Scotia Securities Commission to learn what financial elder abuse is, some of the vulnerabilities and warning signs, and what to do if you think a loved one may be a victim. David will also examine the red flags of investment fraud to help you recognize and avoid investment fraud.
Thursday, October 16, 7:00 p.m. - Crypto Assets & Securities Regulations
It continues to be a very volatile time for anyone investing in cryptocurrency and crypto assets. Do you know how crypto assets and the trading of these assets is regulated in Canada?
Join David Harrison from the Nova Scotia Securities Commission (NSSC) as he explains how crypto assets are regulated by securities regulators in Canada, what that means for crypto trading platforms and investors, and the risks around investing in this ever-evolving industry.
During Seniors Week the Nova Scotia Department of Seniors is delivering a speaker series from Oct. 2- 9. NSSC will be taking part in two of these sessions which will be delivered online. To learn more about the series please visit this website.

This presentation provides an overview of scams and fraud that target seniors, with tips to help identify and avoid common scams. The presentation will also provide helpful resources and guidance on next steps if an individual has been scammed.

During Investor Education Month our Investing Explained reels series will premiere two new videos. Our latest Investing Explained reels will focus on mutual funds, and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). Our YouTube channel will also be adding a new video to our 3 Minutes on… series during Investor Education Month. The latest video will take a closer look at Dollar Cost Averaging, and it comes in under time with a shorter two-minute run time. Look for that video to premiere on our YouTube channel in the middle of the month.
