The calendar flips over to October tomorrow, which is the start of Investor Education Month (IEM). Throughout IEM the Nova Scotia Securities Commission (NSSC) has investor events, presentations and content planned to help Nova Scotians make more informed investment decisions. Here’s a rundown of what we have planned for the month.
Presentations:
NSSC has two presentations scheduled at the Halifax Central Library in October. The first week of October is also Seniors’ Week in Nova Scotia. In recognition of seniors’ week, on October 8 we will be hosting our financial elder abuse presentation at the Central Library.
Thursday, October 8, 7:00 p.m.
Recognizing Financial Elder Abuse & Investment Fraud
Did you know that financial elder abuse is the most prevalent form of elder abuse? As Nova Scotia’s population continues to get older, financial elder abuse is becoming more prevalent.
Join David Harrison from the Nova Scotia Securities Commission to learn what financial elder abuse is, some of the vulnerabilities and warning signs, and what to do if you think a loved one may be a victim. David will also examine the red flags of investment fraud to help you recognize and avoid investment fraud.

Crypto Assets & Securities Regulations
It continues to be a very volatile time for anyone investing in cryptocurrency and crypto assets. Do you know how crypto assets and the trading of these assets is regulated in Canada?
Join David Harrison from the Nova Scotia Securities Commission (NSSC) as he explains how crypto assets are regulated by securities regulators in Canada, what that means for crypto trading platforms and investors, and the risks around investing in this ever-evolving industry.
Special Seniors Week presentations:
During Seniors week NSSC will be partnering with Nova Scotia Department of Seniors to participate in their Seniors Week Speaker Series.
On October 6 starting at 2 p.m. Commission staff will join staff from the Service Nova Scotia: Consumer Protection for their annual scams panel. This presentation titled Fraud Prevention for Seniors will spotlight prominent frauds targeting Nova Scotians, as well as highlight some of the red flags and warning signs you can look for to identify and avoid fraud.
On October 7, starting at 10 a.m. Commission staff will be playing Fraud Bingo at the Keshen Goodman Library. Fraud Bingo is a fun program that makes learning about fraud prevention more fun and engaging. Fraud Bingo players have a chance to win small prizes while learning about investment fraud prevention. It takes a regular bingo game and changes BINGO to FRAUD. All FRAUD numbers called include fraud prevention tips and info.

Events:
Commission staff will also be at the Halifax Central Library on Wednesday, October 14 to deliver a program titled From Stablecoins to Prediction Markets: Evolutions in investing and what it means for investors.
Over the last year investing has become more complicated for investors and advisers. Prediction markets, event contracts, crypto assets, stablecoins and finfluencers are just a few of the emerging issues that investors are being bombarded with. These emerging issues have been consistently covered by the media, forums, Redditt and on social media. However, not all this coverage and discussions is unbiased, accurate, or even legal. Investors may hear a lot about these issues, but do they fully understand them, the risks behind them, and how they are addressed under securities laws?
Join staff from the Nova Scotia Securities Commission during Investor Education Month for insightful, unbiased presentations and discussions on these emerging issues. Topics to be included and discussed in this program include:
Prediction markets & event contracts
Crypto assets and stablecoins
Prominent investment frauds targeting Nova Scotians
Q&A session on securities laws and investing in Nova Scotia
Whether you are new to investing or have years of experience, this session will help you make informed investment decisions and recognize potential warning signs of fraud.
