March is Fraud Prevention Month!

March is Fraud Prevention Month. The Commission will debut four new Fraud Prevention animated videos during the month. Each video will highlight a specific type of investment scam and will showcase scenarios in which our investor John is defrauded and the warning signs he could have recognized. A new video will be posted every Friday throughout March. You can find links to the videos on the video section of our website, or by visiting our YouTube channel.

The Commission will continue to visit universities and high schools across Nova Scotia in March, delivering presentations on informed investing and investment fraud. So far during the 2019-20 school year we have visited Saint Mary’s University, Cape Breton University, Dalhousie University, Mount Saint Vincent University, NSCC Ivany Campus, Prince Andrew High School, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Charles P. Allen High School and Acadia University. If you’d like us to visit your school, or want more information on our presentations, please contact us.

The Commission will also be hosting a special Fraud Prevention Month lunch and learn for Nova Scotia Government employees in cooperation with the Financial Empowerment Network of Nova Scotia on March 25 at noon. Called Understanding Securities Regulation and Protecting Yourself from Investment Fraud, the presentation will be delivered by David Harrison our Investor Education and Communications Officer. Attendees will learn about the basic structure of securities regulation in Nova Scotia and Canada and why it matters to your investments. They’ll also learn about different types of investment fraud, how to recognize red flags and how to avoid fraud and protect your money. Any Nova Scotia government employee can attend the presentation, which is being held in the Service Nova Scotia and Internal Services boardroom on the eighth floor of the Martime Centre. Please bring your own lunch to eat during the presentation. To RSVP, or for more information please email Allison Foley at allison.foley@novascotia.ca
