File a Complaint or Report an Investment Scam
If you think you’ve been approached with a fraudulent investment or have found something online or on social media that looks like fraud involving securities you can report it to the Nova Scotia Securities Commission (NSSC) by using our online fraud reporting form.
Check Registration
If anyone approaches you with an investment opportunity, whether in-person, online, text message, etc., you should check to see if they’re registered. Anyone selling or advising on securities in Nova Scotia, or any other province or territory in Canada, must be registered with their local securities regulator. You can check a person or company’s registration by using the National Registration Search.
Investor Alerts & Cautions
The NSSC and other Canadian securities regulators issue investors alerts and cautions to warn investors about bad actors and fraudulent investment opportunities that could be financially harmful to them on a regular basis.
You can find the NSSC’s Investor Alerts and Caution page here. The Canadian Securities Administrators hosts an investor warnings and alerts page that collects warnings and alerts from every Canadian securities regulator. You can also search through alerts. This page is updated frequently and can be found here.
Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) collects and shares information on fraud in Canada. This includes information on investment fraud. The CAFC website includes an index of prominent frauds, fraud news and alerts, and regular fraud reports.
Canadian Anti-Scam Coalition
The Canadian Anti-Scam Coalition (CASC) was announced earlier this year as a partnership between financial institutions, regulators, law enforcement, and other organizations to educate and protect Canadians and “Stand Against Scams.” The organization is still in its infancy but looks to be a reliable source for Canadians looking for information on fraud prevention.
