November is Financial Literacy Month

Welcome to Financial Literacy Month. Here’s what the Nova Scotia Securities Commission has planned to help educate investors throughout the month.

Cryptoassets and cryptocurrency continue to be in the news often. Bitcoin was made legal tender in El Salvador. Crypto ETFs are coming to the United States, following Canada’s lead from last year. The price of cryptoassets remains extremely volatile. However, just because you’re always hearing about crypto doesn’t mean everyone really knows about it. To help investors, we’re debuting a new crypto for beginners campaign. The campaign will include a new info sheet and short videos on basic crypto terms, trading, and the risks that anyone thinking about speculating on crypto should know. Look for the info sheet and videos on our website and YouTube channel later this week.

There are some important amendments being made to securities laws to enhance protections of older and vulnerable investors that are coming into effect at the end of this year and the Commission wants everyone to know about them. These amendments are the addition of a trusted contact person and temporary holds. To help spread the word on these important amendments we will be sharing new blog posts on the topics, an information sheet and two short videos. All this content will begin appearing on our website and social channels throughout the month. Please share this with your family and friends so they can be informed about these important protections.

Also during Financial Literacy Month we’re bringing back our popular #TerminologyTuesday posts to Twitter and LinkedIn. Follow our feed every Tuesday to learn more about a specific investment term. We’ll provide the definition of each team and a link back to our website where you can learn more. Look for the first post tomorrow, Tuesday, November 2.

Along with our #TerminologyTuesday we’ll also be sharing our usual collection of investor education content through blogs and videos all month long. You can always access our full slate of investor education videos anytime by visiting our YouTube Channel.

If you’re a Nova Scotia provincial government employee, the Commission will be delivering a Financial Literacy Month Lunch and Learn in partnership with Nova Scotia Consumer Protection. The lunch and learn will be held online via MS Teams on Wednesday, November 24 from 12-1 p.m. To register and get the MS Teams links contact David Harrison - david.harrison@novascotia.ca.

Finally, our Student Connections program will continue to deliver presentations to students throughout Financial Literacy Month. On the calendar for November are in-person and virtual trips to Mount Saint Vincent University, Prince Andrew High School, and NSSC Ivany Campus. If you’d like us to talk to your students in-person or virtually, please contact us.
